TAM VALLEY

The community is close to hiking trails through the Golden Gate Recreation Area and along Mount Tamalpais’ coastal crest.

Hillside homes and flat neighborhoods close to everything.

Tam Valley features hillside homes and a flat neighborhood called Little City Farms. The community is close to hiking trails through the Golden Gate Recreation Area and along Mount Tamalpais’ coastal crest. Tam Valley is also near Highway 101 and just a stone’s throw from Muir’s Beach. Historically, you could get more house for your money in Tam Valley than you could in other Marin County communities, although this is starting to change as more and more people discover all that it has to offer. Tam Valley still represents great value with spacious homes and proximity to San Francisco. If you want to be close to both nature and SF in a community with a down-to-earth lifestyle and culture, Tam Valley is exactly what you’re looking for.

People & Lifestyle

Tam Valley might be the best area of Mill Valley for commuting into San Francisco. It’s also less insulated from San Francisco’s famous fog, and it tends to experience more weather than other Mill Valley areas. The community offers a great balance of proximity to SF and the unique lifestyle and atmosphere of Mill Valley. Homes are close to the award-winning Tamalpais Valley Elementary School.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Tam Valley is less than three miles from Downtown Mill Valley, and it also offers its own small downtown area with a great selection of local businesses at Tamalpais Valley Junction. Proof Lab is the area’s premier surf shop, carrying over 400 boards and all other surfing essentials. Proof Lab also sells skateboards and apparel. Right next to Proof Lab, Equator Coffees pours excellent fresh-roasted single-origin coffees and blends. Hook Fish Co. at Surf Lab offers a beer garden serving fish and chips, burritos, and crab cakes alongside a range of local beers, natural wines, and kombucha.

Good Earth Natural Foods opened its first Marin County location in 1969 and remains at the forefront of organic grocery shopping. The store sells fresh produce and other natural foodstuffs along with ready-to-eat items such as pizza slices, grilled and deli sandwiches, wok bowls, and Mexican-style taqueria eats. You can also pick up organic berries, kimchi, and seasonal fruits and veggies at Ceceilia’s Gardens Fruit Stand just outside Tam Valley’s downtown area. Follow Highway 101 a short distance southeast from Tam Valley for upscale takes on classic American comfort eats at the charmingly old-school 1930s Buckeye Roadhouse.

Things to Do

Eastwood Park is the main neighborhood greenspace within Tam Valley. The park has a large lawn, trails, tennis courts, picnic tables, and a playground. Eastwood Park is just a street away from the far larger natural expanse of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Spanning more than 82,000 acres, the Golden Gate Recreation Area offers a huge amount to see and explore. You can go whale watching at the Muir Beach Overlook or see birds of prey in the skies over the Marin Headlands. Historic sites within the recreation area include the 19th-century Cliff House and Sutro bathhouse ruins, the early 20th-century army buildings of Fort Baker, the Cold War museum at the former Nike Missile Site, and the World War II guns of Battery Townsley.

Muir Beach on the Golden Gate Recreation Area’s Pacific Ocean coastline is a picturesque sandy stretch with a cove and lagoon. Head to the beach in autumn to witness the arrival of thousands of migrating monarch butterflies.

Residents of Tam Valley can also easily reach hiking trails ascending Mount Tamalpais and the 554-acre old-growth redwood forest of Muir Woods National Monument.

Tam Valley is served by the Mill Valley Elementary School District and Tamalpais Union High School District. Highlights include:

  • Tamalpais Valley Elementary School, Public, K-5
